Trauma and Relationship Stress

When the nervous system takes charge of the conversation

The effects of trauma often leave us challenged with being unable to control our reactions when we feel afraid. Sometimes we “lose it,” and it surprises the hell out of us. We don’t mean to say hurtful things, but fear takes over and we lose touch with what’s happening. Then our heart breaks as we come back to reality and see the faces of our loved ones staring at us like we’re a stranger. Even when we deeply love our family and friends, unkind reactions can happen before we can stop them, leaving us feeling remorseful every time.

Fighting with loved ones is so difficult, but shutting down is just as awful

Sometimes our fear can make us simply shut down and we can’t move out of the fog to feel anything. At this point, we can come to believe that it’s better not to say anything that might make things worse. Perhaps you have experienced days when you try your best to act like nothing is wrong, hoping everyone will just get on with their day so you can find space to cry without being asked what’s wrong a hundred times. It may be time to find support in healing your traumatic wounds.

Jess Talley, holistic counselor for anxiety and trauma

We all want and deserve to feel comfortable in our own skin, in our own home

Sharing fears and feelings of shame can be very scary, especially with someone we don’t know or are not sure we can trust. But at some point, there comes a time when we know we can no longer do it on our own.

I am a holistic counselor who can help

I’m Jess and I have been trained to work with trauma and the impacts it has on our lives and relationships. It feels scary to suddenly just “lose it” or to shut down, but our nervous system automatically responds defensively when we don’t feel safe. I can help you learn about your nervous system’s responses to environmental cues and how to increase feelings of safety.

In our sessions, you will learn to accept yourself, without judgment, and understand what you need based on your own wiring, not compared to others. I will offer you my knowledge, care, experience, and feedback, with humility and a playful down-to-earthness so that your heart can open to new possibilities. My practice provides a holistic lens through which we can create an authentic custom-made way of working together to explore your whole self, your strengths and fears, and your soul’s longings.

My commitment in therapy is to provide safety, compassion, and validation as you move in and through difficult and painful feelings, strengthen your inner resources, and build new narratives about how you show up in your life and in your relationships.

Healing takes time, patience, and commitment, and I'm here when you're ready to get started.
