Meet Your Counselor, near Roanoke & the New River Valley

Sometimes the pressure and demands of what society expects from us wear us down so that we lose touch with our brilliance, our unique talents, and our sense of independence. And the constant anxiety or the effects of past trauma that is endured on a daily basis prevents us from experiencing a sense of peace. Life shouldn’t have to be endured but instead, experienced fully as we claim our right to be here, just as we are.

I would love to help you reconnect with your brilliance and your independence and to rediscover your joy. Let’s explore sustainable visions of a happy, healthy, successful life that don’t include neglecting or denying yourself and your needs.

Jessica Talley-Haynes, Holistic & Integrative Counseling

My name is Jess Talley, LPC and I provide safe, playful avenues for increasing self-awareness, reconnecting with your body, your environment, and your relationships, and exploring what’s hidden below feelings of tension and uneasiness.

I have a contagious healing energy and will be your biggest advocate to help you help yourself. My practice offers something uniquely different from the traditional talk therapy session. We could talk about what’s going on but we will also use other mediums that allow you to express with more ease and flow, like music, nature, drawing, or writing. I am flexible and open-minded and I excel in inspiring new perspectives.

I feel that it’s beneficial to provide education about the nervous system and its automatic responses, which can sometimes cause a sense of fear or shame if not understood. I integrate consideration of lifestyle and healthy nutrition into therapy and cultivate awareness of the impact of daily habits on our mood and the state of our mental health. And I’m a therapist who strives to practice what I teach and to model a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

My training in nature-informed therapy, or ecotherapy, inspires me to help clients reestablish or strengthen connections to nature, which is our human heritage and essential for a balanced nervous system and a true sense of belonging in this world. I provide opportunities for outdoor sessions or walks and activities in nature, a healthy alternative to tiny offices with sound machines. Additionally, clients have access to sessions utilizing music and personal imagery to increase awareness of and connections to their inner life of emotions, physiology, and deep soul longings.

Part of the counseling experience is learning about our strengths and resources to build self-awareness, resiliency, and opportunities for healthy co-regulation. Some of my top strengths include creativity, curiosity, gratitude, and zest, which I bring into my therapy practice as resources for co-creating sessions that are interesting, a good balance of safe and adventurous, and fun when possible, with healthy doses of encouragement for challenging limiting ideas, beliefs, and expectations.
